Though there are still some who have a negative or incorrect opinion of it, meditation has become a much-recommended tool to fight off stress, anxiety, depression, and other negative mental states that, in turn, affect our health or productivity. There is even a growing business of meditation assistance services that help guide people toward a calmer state, often daily or maybe even more times in a day. Given the way these tidbits of meditation aids come in digital format, they’re often delivered through smartphones, which is a bit ironic considering these devices are often the cause of stress and distractions. Having a dedicated meditation device might sound overkill, but this rather interesting companion makes that a bit more worthwhile by showing you an adorable face to go along with your mood or the mood that you’re aiming for.
Designer: Pascal Grangier
Meditation services like Headspace and Calm are able to reach a large number of subscribers by offering their content through smartphones. It’s a very practical and convenient strategy that lets you get into a calmer head space anytime, anywhere. The drawback is that you might be tempted or distracted by the very smartphone you’re using to meditate, defeating the purpose of the exercise entirely.
The Headspace Companion is a design concept for a device that leads you into that same state in a more detached yet also more visually appealing way. It’s basically a toy-like device that stands on small feet, almost like a clock. But instead of a clock face, you get an actual digital face themed like clouds, the sun, veggies or fruits, and other objects you might not immediately associate with meditation. The style of both the device and the faces are cartoonish and almost comical, enough to bring a smile to your face every time you look at it.
The idea is for these faces to reflect your mental state, either based on your mood (probably taken from health sensors or services connected to the device) or just how much time has elapsed since your last meditation. The faces can be gloomy or even angry, while clouds can become darker as time passes. Once you start meditation, however, the character’s face, mood, and colors lighten up as well, reflecting what should be your mental state after the process. Just like on the app, you can set how much time you want to devote to meditation using a wooden wheel timer on its side.
Admittedly, the concept leaves a lot of the technical implementation up to the imagination, since it seems to focus mostly on the visual experience more than anything else. It’s still a rather interesting meditation device that almost literally gives a face to your emotions, a visualization that might even help some people face their problems and watch the same calm reflected on their own faces.
Teenage Engineering is best known for audio equipment with unique aesthetics, though it does sometimes put out unrelated products, such as a desktop PC tower, wooden “choir” mini figurines, and a toy car. That last one was its prelude to the real product launch it had planned, a product that seemed to straddle the line between a full-fledged tool and a sophisticated toy. Given its size, design, and pedigree, Teenage Engineering’s shiny new EP-133 K.O. II is something you might find hard to take seriously at first glance. Fortunately, it seems to have just the right knobs and buttons, literally, to make it a real tool for music makers, at least those that will be able to shoulder its price.
Designer: teenage engineering
This new sampler, sequencer, and composer takes its inspiration from the brand’s Pocket Operator PO-33 K.O. I back in 2015. This device’s small, calculator-like design and accessible price point really made it look and feel more like some fun gadget for some whimsical music mixing. In contrast, the EP-133 K.O. II, or just KO II, for short, is way too large to fit in your pocket, which is the price you’ll have to pay for significantly more functionality that makes this portable synthesizer worth its weight in gold.
The aesthetics are also worlds apart as well. While the Pocket Operators really looked more like black Pocket Calculators, the KO II more than doubles the size and injects a mix of grays, whites, and oranges all over the place. The large buttons, tall knobs, and industrial aesthetic might remind some of the props from sci-fi shows during the 60s, specifically those from Star Trek. The rectangular screen’s choice of colors and shapes to display the user interface is also reminiscent of the show’s LCARS user interface. It might even be able to play those tricorder sound effects because, after all, it is a portable synth anyway.
It actually has quite a lot of features for that purpose, including 999 sample slots and a built-in speaker. There’s also a built-in mic to let you record your own samples right then and there, as well as a selection of drums, bass, and keys to help you get started. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack in case you want to extend the sampler’s features, but do note it only has 64MB of memory, which is probably the biggest deal-breaker for this product. Apparently, the limitation is there to encourage musicians to finish their creations in one go rather than delaying them forever.
Teenage Engineering is slapping a $299 price tag on the EP-133 K.O. II, amusingly just $50 more than its toy Grip Car. It’s still considerably lower than its other synths, enough to entice music makers of all skill levels, but still quite a hefty investment. Then again, it’s a fully functional portable groove box that has quite a distinctive design you can flaunt around, giving you an image of a retro-futuristic music genius controlling the beat with your hi-tech tool.
As a digital native (meaning I live and breathe online), I have not been very conscious of all my data that is uploaded to various websites and all the cloud-based applications out there. There have been a lot of horror stories about people whose identity have been hacked or compromised because of their data on the cloud but so far, I have been lucky enough to not experience any of this. But if you’re the type of person that is very careful about these kinds of things, this new product may be something worth having.
Designers: Wenkai Li and Yu Dan
ZimaBlade is a x86 personal server that will let you have control over most things even while you’re connected to the world wide web. It will basically remove your files from the cloud and let you have control over things like file sharing, media playback, key management, and even encrypted P2P transmission. It also has a lot of expansion ports and slots including for storage, high-speed networking, PCIe slots, a USB port, and other ports that you may need as you use this server.
The design of the server is more old-school Sony Walkman than actual server or it may also look like a small robot that will transform anytime. It is around the same size as the Raspberry Pi devices but it does not have the usual GPIO pins found in devices like this. It seems to not be that heavy so it can be portable and is made with low-power and modularity in mind. It has an aluminum alloy heatsink so it will not overheat in case you’re a heavy user.
It is pre-installed with the open source CasaOS operating system that has more than 50 Docker apps. The early reviews seem to be positive for those who are in need of portable, personal servers. I don’t have any need for it right now because I am still basically unconcerned with clouds but if one day I do realize that everything I send to the Internet is a risk, then this is something that can be useful for someone like me.
The secret that most companies don’t tell you is that fast charging to 100% actually benefits them rather than the consumer. Sure, you save 10-15 minutes every time you use a fast charger to charge your phone or other device instead of a normal one, but charging at high wattages degrades your battery’s lifespan faster too. A phone that holds its charge for 2 years now begins wearing out faster in 1 year, and that’s great for companies because they can then sell you the newer model… often with an even faster charger!
Leo is a clever little product that prevents that from happening. Sitting between your phone and the power outlet, Leo understands your battery’s health and charges it in a way that keeps it healthier for longer. It optimizes charge speeds to ensure you don’t degrade your battery, ensures you don’t always charge your phone to 100% (that harms the battery too), and automatically pauses charging when you leave your phone plugged in overnight to ensure your battery performs at its best capacity even 2-3 years after you buy a phone… or any battery-powered device for that matter.

All batteries degrade over time, losing their ability to hold energy the way they previously would… An iPhone right out of the box has a battery that needs charging once a day, but a year or two later, the same iPhone needs to be charged an average of thrice a day because it gets discharged faster. Leo was designed to prolong that eventuality, allowing your Lithium-ion battery-powered gadgets to last longer than ‘they were planned to’. Touted as a Battery Life Extender, Leo simply ensures your battery doesn’t get overcharged every time you plug it in. Designed to work with your smartphones, tablets, headphones, game controllers, handheld consoles, drones, or pretty much any gadget with a built-in battery and charged through a USB cable, Leo manages its power requirements to give you a balance between a ‘full battery’ and a ‘healthy battery’.
Set a Charge Limit – Maintaining your batteries within the range of 10% to 90% can significantly extend their lifespan.
Adaptive Charging Speed – Leo charges at a slower, more sustainable rate when you have the time, such as during the night.
Leo does this using a few clever tricks. All you do is add Leo between your device and its charger (so the power passes through it) and it begins working instantaneously. For starters, it makes sure you don’t always charge your gadget to 100% (which can degrade your battery’s health in the long run). Instead, it sets an optimal charge limit of approximately 90% for all your USB devices, which on itself can increase the lifespan of your battery by a lot.
Ghost-mode Button to Fast-charge to 100% – Simply hold the button to swiftly override Leo and switch to fast charging. This way, there’s no need to unplug Leo.
It also manages those wild 60W to 120W charging speeds touted by most Android makers, setting a power cap to your charger’s power delivery. Sure, that means you don’t get those fast charging speeds, but that also means your phone’s battery lasts for as much as 50% longer than it previously would. In a hurry and want to fast-charge your device? A simple button on Leo helps disable it temporarily so you don’t need to unplug it to fast-charge your phone.
Optimized Night Charging – Leo takes a break at around 80% during night charging, effectively reducing the duration your batteries remain at a high charge percentage and voltage.
If you’re one of those folks who plugs their phone in overnight, Leo ensures it doesn’t constantly get charged for those 7-8 hours while you’re asleep. During night charging, Leo takes a break at around 80%, further reducing the duration your batteries remain at a high charge percentage and voltage. You don’t need to toggle through any settings to activate any of Leo’s features – it intuitively reads your battery’s charging protocol, managing the charging process accordingly based on your device, your charger, and the time of the day.
Universal USB-C Connector – Leo’s adaptability enables implementation on both the charger side and the device side.
Roughly the same size as a USB thumb drive (with an eye-catching light strip running vertically), Leo is designed to work with a wide range of USB-C devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, e-readers, headphones, and other accessories. Its compact form factor allows it to easily act as a bridge between chargers and gadgets, without adding to the clutter of your wired charging solutions. It adapts autonomously based on the device and the charger you’re using, instantly adjusting charging protocols to match your device.
Overall, Leo’s broader pitch is to end (or at least drastically prolong) planned obsolescence. We’re all too familiar with headphones dying out after 1-2 years of using them, or a smartphone not having an ‘all-day’ battery life after a year. While a lot of that boils down just to the fact that lithium-ion batteries aren’t designed to last forever, a portion of it can also be attributed to companies engineering obsolescence into their devices so they can sell newer models every year. Simply by ensuring your products last 50% longer than they originally would, Leo helps drastically cut down e-waste while also saving you money in the long run.
Recycled plastic, Modular & Long Lasting Design – The cable is modular and easily replaceable to ensure longevity since even the best cables can wear out over time.
Its sustainable ethos extends to every part of its design too, from the fact that it comes made using recycled plastic to the fact that it even runs OTA updates to ensure that it stays up to date with charging protocols of new devices that launch in the future. If you’re interested in deep-diving into the analytics of your device batteries, Leo will even offer an optional app that lets you measure the battery health, charging status, and charging cycles of the various devices you plug into it. The app also enables the aforementioned OTA updates to keep your Leo on the cutting edge of battery technology.
On paper, Leo’s $58 price tag justifies itself pretty well. Even if it increases your battery’s overall lifespan by 10-20% (as compared to its touted 50%), that effectively means your gadgets last for at least 4-6 months longer than their intended 2-year life cycle. Account for the fact that each household has approximately 5-10 battery-powered USB gadgets, and that translates to hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in savings per year because your devices are effectively lasting longer. Sure, that’s great for the planet… but it’s even greater for the pocket! Each Leo ships with its own USB-C to USB-C cable (with a max 100W output if you ever want to toggle fast charging) and comes with a free, optional smartphone app that’s available on both Android and iOS devices.

Parties with DJs spinning aren’t exactly my cup of tea. I prefer to listen to a band or to have the music just be in the background while I get to talk and relax with people. But of course there are a lot of people who prefer to have a DJ spin some tunes and dance along to various songs that they’re mixing. Nowadays, most DJs prefer using digital tools and platforms but there are still some that prefer the feel and sound of analog tools. What if you could have the best of both worlds in one device?
Designer: Pioneer
Pioneer has been a, well, pioneer in the DJ world with its various turntables and analog decks. Even with the advent of digital tools, they’re still pushing analog turntables but now they’re also adding something to the mix, so to speak. The PLX-CRSS12 is a hybrid turntable that brings the best of both worlds with its digital-analog option. It is actually the world’s first turntable that offers analog record playback as well as tone-arm-free DVS control. These are important features for DJs who want to still use “old school” vinyls but also some of the convenience that digital platforms employ.
When a DJ uses the Digital Vinyl mode, the Magvel clamp holds the record in place so you won’t scratch the record and at the same time control the digital music file. They say that the experience is actually similar to using the other vinyl platforms that Pioneer offers. You can also adjust the “weight” of the record without having to change slip mats or slip sheets, which is convenient if you’re in the middle of mixing or spinning.
The PLX-CRSS12 has a lot of other features that should be useful for the DJ who wants both analog and digital. You get things like a switch to adjust the timing of the turntable when you press stop, built-in MIDI-mappable Performance Pads, built-in OLED display, and high-quality sound reproduction. It comes in a matte black color with some color details in the buttons. It looks pretty classy and cool and has several customizable features as well so it should match what the DJ needs and what he would like his system to look like.
