It isn’t often that you see brutalism as a design style being used outside architecture… but this sculptural speaker is a different beast entirely.
Designed to look like it was chiseled out of actual concrete, “TheSoloist. Sounds.” from Takahiro Miyashita was crafted with the vision of being the absolute centerpiece of your living room. Outwardly, it’s an homage to New York’s Flatiron building, standing at an impressive 43 inches tall with a dizzying amount of detail. Behind that exterior, however, is a 7-speaker setup designed to output a whopping 2000W of audio power, loud enough that its engineers promise “spectacular sound pressure that can be felt directly on the skin.”
Designer: Takahiro Miyashita
Before your ears experience TheSoloist. Sounds.’s audio, your eyes are treated to one of the most beautiful speakers they’ll ever see. Now in the realm of speaker design, TheSoloist. Sounds. is far from traditional. It doesn’t boast your standard acoustic chamber, audio grill, or showcase the drivers. It looks entirely like an artistic representation of New York’s architecture emerging from a block of concrete, but under that facade hides all of the audio magic. The sculpture can be split into two halves, the upper chiseled section and the lower, which arguably house the mid/high, and the woofer drivers respectively.
The lower section sports two 6.5″ woofers, while the upper part of the speaker houses two 3″ mid-range and three 1″ tweeters, covering a frequency range of 20Hz ~ 25KHz. The speaker pulls 2000W of power, and outputs an impressive 110dB of audio. The entire unit comes crafted from faux concrete, weighing 55lb (24.9 kilograms)… which does feel deceptively light for its nearly 4-foot stature.
Recreated for a second edition after the first one sold out, TheSoloist. Sounds. sports an eye-watering $$6,345.32 price tag… but that makes sense just given the amount of effort and intricate detail that went into the exterior as well as its inner hardware. That being said, TheSoloist. Sounds. isn’t for the discerning audiophile. It’s made for people who want an expressive statement piece to dominate their interior spaces – something this brutalist speaker does exceedingly well!
The OnePlus 12 has officially been announced, at least in China, and it matches almost everything that has been leaked previously. No, there is no wood grain model or case, but there is indeed a marble-like green variant on the table. Truth be told, there isn’t anything surprising or new with the OnePlus 12, at least in terms of overall design. It looks exactly like the OnePlus 11 before it, which ties in with the company’s less aggressive branding strategy. That’s not to say they’re exactly the same, of course, and OnePlus is trying to focus on the design story of the phone this time around. In particular, it’s homing in on how the OnePlus 12’s camera was inspired by the same creative and manufacturing processes used to make luxury timepieces as if these two product categories shared a common ancestor.
Designer: OnePlus
To be fair, manufacturers have thankfully started to pay as much attention to materials, colors, and aesthetics as watch-makers do for upscale timepieces. Of course, most of the conventions and practices don’t cleanly transfer between these two worlds, but there are definitely lessons that can be learned from both sides of the fence. Coincidentally, the OnePlus 12 does have one part that lends itself perfectly to that same watch-making expertise thanks to its circular camera bump that does look like a watch to some extent.
OnePlus spares no effort to illustrate how the OnePlus 12’s camera design takes a few pages from luxury watches, like using the same high-end machined aluminum casing for the camera island as well as the plate on top of the cameras. It also uses special laser engraving for the markings on the outer area of the plate, while utilizing a polishing process with micron-level precision for the semi-circular island to achieve an elegant appearance. This is then topped by a circular Gorilla Glass cover, completing the picture of a watch-like camera.
Of course, that story will probably be lost on most buyers who haven’t heard of it, but the OnePlus 12 is undoubtedly quite stunning even without that backstory. Unfortunately, the phone’s color options are rather unremarkable, except for the “emerald green” colorway that looks more like a slab of marble than a gem. The phone does have a classic appeal to it, with its curved back and equally curved screen, though that might also be just a kind way of saying “old”.
The OnePlus 12 is one of the first to carry the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, positioning it as a premium 2024 flagship. Despite appearances, it only has three cameras, a stacked 50MP main shooter, a 64MP telephoto camera with 3x lossless zoom, and a 48MP ultrawide with a 14mm equivalent lens. The other unnamed circle is pretty much a 3D ToF (Time-of-Flight) depth camera. Although now officially available in China, international markets will have to wait until next month to get their hands on the OnePlus 12 and its watch-inspired camera design.
Stockholm-based Transparent makes a lot of minimalist audio tech. For the first time, they’ve released their very own turntable, and it’s mouthwateringly gorgeous. The transparent tempered glass cover lays atop an aluminum body (“meticulously crafted” in either black or white), and it looks like it comfortably fits right along with Transparent’s lineup of high-end speakers — which use similarly minimalistic design elements.
From a technical standpoint, it’s also just a really nice, modern turntable with plenty of gadgetry for today’s hi-fi enthusiast. The preinstalled Elliptical Diamond Ortofon OM Stylus 5E provides warm and rich sound quality, though it can also be swapped out for fancier stylus models or replaced once it wears out. In fact, the entire build is designed for modularity, including its SME-compatible headshell mount.
Designer: Per Brickstad (via Transparent)
The tech specs are pretty impressive on the performance front as well. Its low speed variance means it should play vinyl records more accurately for a smoother sound. It’s geared up with digital optical and analog inputs as well as Bluetooth 5.0 support via its Qualcomm CSR8670C chip, which basically translates to high-fidelity audio output at a low latency even when playing MP3 files directly from your phone.
The built-in 20-25,000Hz +3 / -3 frequency range is also reasonably wide for a hi-fi audio component of the Transparent Turntable’s caliber, meaning it can process rich, deep bass and bring out the crispness of higher frequencies. For instance, when playing a song containing a mixture of low bass, high woodwinds, and additional sounds placed further out to the edges of the soundstage, the Transparent Turntable should be able to accurately reproduce all of that detail without crunching the mid-range.
It looks like everything from its groovy (literally) tonearm right down to its gold-plated contacts are built with high-quality materials and peculiar attention to detail. The unit is also relatively low-profile, weighing only 14 lbs and using a maximum of 15W of electricity per hour. That makes it easy to stick into an eco-friendly household, or even take with you on the road in a minimalistic tiny home.
The Transparent Turntable costs $1,300 on the Transparent website, and you can order it now — ahead of its estimated shipment window in mid-November.

In keeping with its iconic design language and honoring its most famous speaker, Devialet revealed the Gemini II, a pair of TWS earbuds that puts the company’s signature sound in a tiny, portable format that fits in each ear. The beauty, aside from its sound, lies in the fact that each Gemini II earbud looks like a miniature version of the company’s Phantom speaker, creating a visual call-back that isn’t just adorable, it’s also a reminder that each earbud actually packs a punch… and that comes as no surprise, given that Devialet is one of the most awarded audio tech companies on the planet.
Designer: Devialet
Venturing into the earbud space after multiple award-winning speakers and soundbars, Devialet hopes to capture a larger audience with its ‘more affordable’ offering. At €399 ($425), the Gemini II is certainly a pocket-pincher, but it’s still the most budget offering in Devialet’s catalog. The TWS earbuds are also a great way for the company to maintain profitability, given their high margins.
Devialet debuted the Gemini nearly 3 years ago… and with the Gemini II, the company has addressed quite a few upgrades and improvements. For starters, the earbuds are now 22% smaller than their predecessors, weighing only 6 grams a pop, and come with 4 ear-tips to fit a wide range of ear sizes. Titanium drivers power the insides, and the earbuds offer a whopping 40dB of attenuation with their ANC mode.
The Gemini II’s ANC is powered by their company’s secret combination of design and software engineering, which also offers Active Wind Reduction and Internal Delay Compensation. The wind reduction feature relies on a clever bit of engineering that hides the microphone away from wind-prone parts of the earbud, behind an ‘anti-wind’ material. On the software front, wind detection algorithms smartly control Adaptive Noise Cancellation and Transparency intensity according to your environment. As a feature, noise cancellation usually results in a minute delay, but Devialet’s patented algorithm perfectly compensates for it, resulting in a significant gain in noise cancellation, especially at higher frequencies.
The charging case is also a significant 40% smaller than the first-gen Gemini, with a newer design that’s much more reminiscent of a TWS earbud case. While some would probably opine that the previous generation’s case was a little too experimental/sculptural to actually be handy, the Gemini II fixes that with a conventional flip-top case that reveals the two earbuds inside. The case is also adorned by a metallic band that sports the Devialet branding, including a special-edition Opéra de Paris version with a gilded belt and golden segments inside the earbuds.
The Gemini II runs Bluetooth 5.2 which allows it to connect to two devices at the same time. Devialet boasts that the Gemini II offers 22 hours of playback with the charging case, is IPx4 water and sweat resistance, has USB-C as well as Qi-supported wireless charging, and also comes with a companion smartphone app that allows you to configure EQ settings, ANC, transparency mode, and more.
