Electric battery-powered vehicles might seem the future but in the long run, they are harmful to the environment in their wicked way. The next best thing is the hydrogen-powered drivetrain and many automotive manufacturers are already exploring the possibility. Sure, the cost of such vehicles is not practical enough to go mainstream, still, constant innovations in technology are getting things closer to fruition.
MIT’s electric vehicle team is also exploring the possibility with their hydrogen-powered electric motorcycle prototype. The two-wheeler uses a new hydrogen-based testbed and is open source for other proactive automotive developers to test out as the files are available online. Led by Aditya Mehrotra, a graduate student working with mechanical engineering professor Alex Slocum, the Walter M. May and A. Hazel May Chair in Emerging Technologies, the project aims to take clean energy alternatives to the next level with innovation.
Designer: MIT
According to Aditya, “We’re hoping to use this project as a chance to start conversations around ‘small hydrogen’ systems that could increase demand, which could lead to the development of more infrastructure.” The team took a 1999 Ducati Supersport donor motorcycle frame as the basis and fitted an electric motor, drive train, hydrogen tank and other custom-made components to develop the design. Some components were donated by industry sponsors and the two-wheeler took shape over the period of one year.
The heart of the system is a fuel cell developed by South Korean company Doosan and it’s mated to the supporting gas cylinder for drawing energy. Until the drivetrain is fully developed the bike runs on this hybrid system. The bike is still in the early stages of development and is going to be purely a concept of proof for other designs to follow. To this accord, the team is mindful enough to create a handbook detailing the process of development and fail-safes in case anything goes wrong.
This is important because “a lot of the technology development for hydrogen is either done in simulation or is still in the prototype stages because developing it is expensive, and it’s difficult to test these kinds of systems,” as per one of the team members. There have been previous efforts to develop such hydrogen-powered vehicles but nothing that’s completely open-source like this one. The project is an ongoing endeavor until the cost of the fuel cell is made commercially viable.
Samsung has quite a large number of smartphone models in the market, but few have reached notable fame more than the Galaxy Note series. And yes, that includes the one that burst into flames. Although that brand of stylus-bearing smartphones has officially been retired, its spirit lives on in the “Ultra” model of Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship. Call it by any other name, these devices were designed with one unique feature that very few phones have to date: an active stylus for scribbling notes and even making art. That said, there is perhaps some irony that these phones’ screens aren’t designed to take full advantage of that feature, at least in some edge cases, literally. That might finally change with the Galaxy S24 Ultra next year which will be ditching a rather old design convention to hopefully give the S Pen an edge, pun intended.
Designer: Samsung (via David Martin)
Once upon a time, smartphone screens whose edges curved to the side were regarded as a sign of premium and stylish design. There was indeed a hint of elegance, not to mention manufacturing excellence, at seeing the screen disappear to edges, not unlike an infinity pool. It was also a visual trick to make at least the side bezels disappear, though in reality they’ve just been pushed down nearer to the frame. Today, however, that design seems to be showing its age and the trend is leaning more towards completely flat screens and edges.
On stylus-enabled smartphones like the Galaxy Note line and the more recent Galaxy S Ultra models, those curved edges are more liabilities than assets. Technically, a part of the screen “falls off” the edges and can’t be reached by the S Pen without sliding off. Depending on the app, that might be precious screen real estate wasted, and there have been awkward moments when the tip just slips off and ruins your momentum.
According to recently leaked photos, the Galaxy S24 Ultra next year will finally address one of the pain points of avid S Pen users. The screen seems to be completely flat on all sides this time around, which means that owners will have access to the full width of the screen. This design actually benefits all types of content since there will be no interface elements or images that will look distorted at the edges.
The rest of the phone, however, will retain the design from this year’s Galaxy S23 Ultra, at least based on those same photos. That meant it would still have curved left and right edges, while the top and bottom are completely flat. There’s also no change in the camera design, though the hardware is, of course, expected to see some upgrades. This goes in line with leaks last month that the Galaxy S24 series will take a more iterative approach to its design, largely keeping the same aesthetic while slapping flatter screens on top.
As much as most of my workflow is already digital, I still love integrating “old school” digital aspects every once in a while. One thing that I still do to this day is write important things on sticky notes and then putting them around my work area. I have to major problems about it though: they sometimes fall off and sometimes, I don’t understand my own handwriting. This new device from an offshoot company of Samsung Electronics might be the answer to my problem.
Designer: Mangoslab
The Nemonic Gen 2 inkless, thermal, and wireless printer lets you print your notes and even images on Ultra Sticky Notes that will not easily fall off. The small printer can be connected to desktops and mobile devices and lets you print notes that you drew, wrote, typed, captured on the connected app. It can even be integrated with Microsoft Office apps as wel as Slack and Zapier so if you use any of those in your regular workflow, then your productivity should run even more smoothly than usual.
There are different templates for each of the integrated apps so you can create either handwritten or typewritten notes. It is also able to remove shadows from photos or diagrams that you capture from a whiteboard or screen through the Nemonic Scanner app and then you can print it directly. It also has a de-curl feature so your sticky notes come out flat if needed. It also has auto-cut finishing so no need to stress about tearing or manually cutting off the note.
It is still currently on Kickstarter but they have already more than met their initial goal of $3,000. The Ultra Sticky Notes come with the package already but they will probably sell refills separately eventually as well. This will definitely be added to my dream devices to have at home in the hopes that my productivity will be further improved with this digital/analog hybrid.

Nestled in the easternmost state of Mexico, Quintana Roo is the stunning hotel Boca de Agua. Designed by Mexico City architect Frida Escobedo, who is the winner of the 2024 Charlotte Perriand Award, the hotel is located next to the Bacalar Lagoon which is defined by clean blue waters that instantly invite you in. The crystal clear waters of the lagoon seem like an instant relief from the heat of the Mexican environment! The Boca de Agua is a family of minimal wooden treehouses that are surrounded by lush greenery and foliage.
Designer: Frida Escobeda
The holiday destination is brimming to the top with greenery in an effort to have a positive and calming impact on the guests’ mental health, while also positively affecting the natural environment. “Since my early twenties, I started suffering from crippling anxiety,” said Boca de Agua’s founder Rodrigo Juarez. “The only times I was able to get out of this frustrating loop was when I would spend extended periods of time in nature. Since this realization, I began a long journey to try to develop a project in the intersection of natural conservation and mental health – and Boca de Agua was born.” Juarez wanted to extend that calming sensation he experienced in nature to others, providing them with a peaceful haven of sorts.
The hotel includes 22 raised structures, some of which are one-bedroom, while others are two bedrooms and two restaurants. One of the restaurants features a stargazing platform on top. The property also includes a lagoon deck, a petanque court, and a spa with four mature chaká trees surrounding it.
Besides being a lush and relaxing location, the Boca de Agua hotel also aims to engage local small businesses and provide employment to emerging professionals from underrepresented groups. The design of the hotel is also sustainable and is highlighted by an Escobedo staple, which is latticework. The latticework ensures natural ventilation and shade while providing the space with an artisanal and charming vibe. At the same time, it ensures that the site utilizes timber, and employs local labor and construction techniques, irrespective of its modern design.

Sleep is often the activity that gets sacrificed first in the name of productivity, but studies show how poor sleep is not only counterproductive, it also contributes to many medical conditions like obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and more. At the same time, the way we wake up is also critical in making us feel well-rested, but the majority of alarm clocks and apps are designed to jolt us awake without consideration. Two different but interrelated problems might sound like they require two different solutions, but the innovative Wethm Sleep Enhancer offers a single product to solve both.
Set Up the Device on your Bed – Place the sensor directly on your mattress beneath the sheet at chest height.
Smooth Vibrations Can Relax Your Body – Using a lulling technique called cardiovascular synchronization, your heart paces with the gentle vibrations, guiding your body into sweet relaxation.
Wake Up Feeling Refreshed – When the moment is just right, a tender buzz embraces you, waking you up feeling refreshed.
Be in Control – Understand your sleep, and gain insights to improve your nights.
Unlike fixes that rely on triggering chemicals inside our bodies, Wethm imitates gentle vibrations of a train ride to slow the heart down, with a technique known as cardiovascular synchronization. When the heart slows down its rhythm, it sends a signal to the rest of the body to clock down, gently lulling you into deeper sleep. And when it’s the right time to wake up, Wethm also uses tender buzzing to gradually wake you up, making you feel refreshed and recharged, ready to face the day head-on.
Using Wethm is simple and comfortable, and it doesn’t require you to wear anything on your head or even on your wrist. You simply place the long, flexible pad on top of the mattress and under your sheets at chest level, and set the controller on a bedside table or even on the side of the mattress. Connect the device with the Wethm smartphone app, set up your alarm for the week, and you’re good to go.
Wethm does more than just help you sleep better and wake up properly. With AI-powered tracking, you can gain personal insights into your sleeping behavior to help you make adjustments to improve your sleep quality. With the Wethm app, all your data and all the controls are at your fingertips.
