Revopoint RANGE 2 3D scanner makes short work of scanning large objects

3D scanning has traditionally been the domain of big production studios and companies because of the size of the equipment and their prohibitive costs. With the arrival of handheld scanners, however, the doors were thrown wide open for anyone in any field to make their own 3D models from real-world objects, whether it’s for fun, art, health, or profit.

Typical handheld 3D scanners work great when working with small objects that are no larger than the device itself. Of course, real-world objects like car parts, whole vehicles, and even human bodies are quite big and push these smaller scanners to the limit. Enter the new Revopont RANGE 2, the latest in a line of lightweight but powerful 3D scanners designed to handle large objects without breaking a sweat, making sure that your creativity and productivity aren’t limited by the size of your model.

Revopoint RANGE 2 is a portable handheld dual depth camera structured infrared light 3D scanner designed for capturing large objects like furniture, people, and vehicles.

Because handheld 3D scanners work by guiding the depth cameras across and around the target, the devices need to be able to capture a great amount of detail with great depth quickly and steadily with accuracy and precision. That’s a rather tall order for a small device, especially one that is made to be accessible to both amateurs and pros alike, but Revopoint’s expertise really shines through with the upgrades that its RANGE 2 3D scanner packs in a compact and portable form. For example, thanks to new depth cameras that have double the sensor size, the Revopoint RANGE 2 can work on a distance ranging from 400 mm to 1,300 mm, a 60% increase that makes it even faster to capture large objects compared to the previous generation, and can scan an area up to 860 x 1380 mm in size.

Range isn’t the only thing that’s bigger and better on the RANGE 2, of course. Four flash LEDs banish shadows for a more uniform color capture, while an improved RGB camera with a bigger aperture is able to capture more color information, ensuring clear color capture with higher levels of detail for more accurate textures and realistic-looking 3D models. An upgraded tracking system utilizes the device’s built-in 9-axis IMU (Inertial Measuring Unit) to keep the scan steady even if your hands aren’t. Four Infrared LED fill lights also make it easier to recognize markers, resulting in more accurate frame stitching in marker mode.

Thanks to these powerful features, the Revopoint RANGE 2 is even more versatile and as flexible as before. With Wi-Fi 6 and USB-C connections, you can be assured that transmitting critical data will be fast and stable. As before, the scanner is compatible with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices, functioning in handheld mode or set on a stand in front of a turntable. And with the Revo Scan 5 software, the scanning process couldn’t be easier, especially with post-processing features, such as frame editing, hole filling, overlap detection, etc, to enhance your workflow.

With the Revopoint RANGE 2 3D scanner, you have a whole new world of large objects you will be able to scan. You can easily scan car or mechanical parts, offering a cost-effective and high-performance way to study them through reverse engineering or produce replacements. Archaeologists, scientists, and museum creators can now also digitize artifacts to preserve them for posterity or turn them into XR experiences. And, of course, artists and creators now have a portable yet powerful tool to bring their ideas to life. Scanning big objects for your big projects will no longer be a problem with the new and improved Revopoint RANGE 2!

Samsung Music Frame turns your speaker into a work of art

When you have a speaker in your house or in your office, it’s easy to see that you have a speaker. Most are designed to be aesthetically pleasing but still you know that they are speakers. But then there are also speakers that can masquerade as something else, in case you wanted something that would blend in with the look of your room. Samsung announced at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show 2024 that they will be launching their newest “incognito” device, The Music Frame, which may soon be the latest addition to your wall.

Designer: Samsung

The Samsung Music Frame is a music speaker that can also camouflage as a picture frame for aesthetic purposes. It comes with a physical frame where you can place your photo or painting to hang on your wall and you can just surprise people that audio will be playing out of the frame. Unlike some of the similar products in the market, there is no digital part in the flame so the print that you’ll display is fully analog and can be changed whenever you want to since the notches that secure the print are easy to remove and attach.

The frame itself measures 12.9 x 12.9 inches but the space for the print is 8 x 8 inches. It is able to hide six speakers inside of its frame, including two woofers, two tweeters, and two midrange drivers. There are also waveguides included so the sound can be spread out in a bigger room. These speakers use intelligent audio processing so you get “premium audio experience”. If you pair it with Samsung TVs and soundbars, the Q-symphony technology will be able to give you surround sound. There is of course a thin power cable to connect it to an outlet but otherwise, there are no other wires needed as you connect it to your source device through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

This isn’t the first time that Samsung has brought a device that can double as decoration. They previously released the Frame TV which has customizable bezels, a matte screen, and artwork that can appear on the screen when you want to use it as a display. There are no other details released yet like release date or price range but already there is a lot of interest generated after the announcement and demo at CES 2024.

How Robots Are Expanding Their Fields of Work By Attaining Emotional Designs

Robots have long captured our imaginations, from the helpful household robots of science fiction to the industrial machines that streamline manufacturing processes. However, the integration of robots into our daily lives has often been hampered by the challenges they face when navigating complex human environments. These limitations have confined their utility to controlled spaces in industries such as logistics and manufacturing. But now, a groundbreaking design concept known as “Turing” is poised to change the game, bringing a fresh perspective on robotic technology.

Designer: Cambridge Consultants (Tom Shirley, Anya Pivčuka)

1

Turing is not just another robot; it’s a robotic platform with an emotional design at its core. It was developed by a team of multi-disciplinary experts, including designers, engineers, and researchers, to address a significant challenge in robotics: enabling robots to work in complex human environments while fostering collaboration between humans and machines. Turing’s approach seeks to unlock the untapped potential of human-robot interaction, one of the last remaining barriers to a future where robots become our everyday companions.

In the early stages of UX testing, the team behind Turing discovered that mimicking human emotion was a highly effective means of communicating the robot’s movements and intentions. They employed journey mapping to craft a coherent set of thoughts and emotions for the robot, resulting in a personality and behavior that users could relate to and engage with. By drawing inspiration from well-known characters in animation and film, they could identify the most appropriate personality for a given environment. This adaptability allows Turing to modify its behavior based on the specific context, ensuring it doesn’t seem out of place in various settings.

Turing is designed to work in collaboration with people, capable of navigating through crowded environments using body language, gestures, and emotional cues to communicate with our subconscious. This non-verbal, intuitive communication is significantly faster than traditional speech, enabling the sub-second reaction times necessary to avoid collisions in crowded areas. Moreover, Turing’s modular nature allows it to be adapted to a wide range of industries and customized to address diverse business needs.

1

The versatility of Turing makes it a game-changer in various industries:

1. Retail: In retail, Turing can assist shoppers with tasks ranging from providing general information to guiding them through the store and even carrying their shopping bags. The emotional and charming personality it displays creates a memorable shopping experience that can be tailored to each venue’s ambiance.

2. Service Industry: Turing comes to the rescue of businesses in the service industry, such as bars and restaurants, which often struggle to recruit enough staff. It can efficiently take orders and deliver food and drinks to customers, enhancing their overall experience. Its adaptability ensures it can seamlessly blend into different restaurant environments, from casual to fine dining.

3. Medical Environments: Turing plays a crucial role in medical settings by reducing the burden on healthcare professionals. It can perform repetitive, time-consuming tasks, such as dispensing medication in low-risk hospital wards. This not only frees up staff to focus on patient care but also helps maintain consistent medication schedules. However, the acceptance of robots like Turing in healthcare settings may take time, as people need to build trust in the accuracy of the tasks performed.

Turing is a groundbreaking development in the world of robotics. By embracing emotional design and a highly adaptable, modular nature, it is pushing the boundaries of human-robot interaction and addressing the limitations that have confined robots to specific industries. With Turing, the future of robotics looks promising, as it promises to bring robots out of controlled environments and into our everyday lives, as social, collaborative, and empathetic companions.

These recyclable, paper RFID tags look like a work of magic

Passive RFID tags, like the ones attached to products in stores for easy checkout, are generally manufactured using a mixture of metal and circuitry to form the tag’s primary parts: a microchip and an equally microscopic antenna. These bits work together to store and communicate information to a nearby RFID reader, and they’re decently cheap to mass-produce, only costing around $0.10 in materials per tag (according to the IAITAM in 2021).

Still, the gross cost of mining and producing large quantities of metal and circuitry components adds up over time, and due to the nature of those materials, regular passive RFID tags have nowhere to go — well, other than the trash bin — once they’re pulled off of the products they’re designed to protect.

According to PulpaTronics, the developer of a revolutionary all-upcycled paper RFID tag design, over 12 billion RFID tags are manufactured per year, often for single-use purposes, after which they end up in landfills. Founded by a group of four students at the Imperial College London’s Dyson School of Design Engineering, the PulpaTronics team is already making waves  (and winning multiple awards in sustainable design) for their ingenious paper RFID tag design, which eliminates metal from the manufacturing process entirely.

Designer: Chloe So, Barna Soma Biro, Rui Ma, Jingyan Chen (via PulpaTronics)

PulpaTronics’ all-paper RFID tags store information geometrically, using a laser to imprint a “conductive layer of carbon material” directly onto paper materials upcycled from the recycling bin and from the trash. According to the James Dyson Award organization, the team also experimented with other materials, like wood and cork, before ultimately landing on paper. What resulted is an RFID tag design that is twice as cheap to mass-produce as other RFID tags.

What’s interesting about this design is how the team was able to create each part of the RFID tag, including antennae, without any metal whatsoever — once again, it’s all just paper with a little bit of carbon sketched on top — and the geometric shape of the carbon layer is what gives the RFID tag design its conductivity and its ability to transmit information to a nearby reader.

If PulpaTronics’ new tag design goes into mass-production, that could apparently save “20,000,000 kilograms of CO2 annually” per 100,000 items using the design. In any case, this is a sizable win for sustainable engineering — further proving that it’s possible to replace metal and other scarce and non-degradable materials with alternatives.

ChatGPT-Powered Audio Dock Can Record, Transcribe, and Summarize Your Calls, Saving Hours of Work

Think of the HiDock H1 as your AI assistant on steroids. Designed as a pretty slick-looking multiport dock for your PC or Mac, the HiDock H1 does more than simply give your machine extra ports. It works as an all-capable AI-enabled audio dock for your internet calls, meetings, and memos. HiDock H1 works with both your desktop/laptop as well as your phone, functioning across websites/apps like Skype, Google Meet, FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and even WhatsApp and YouTube. It records audio, transcribes it for you, and can even generate summaries like to-do lists, outlines, etc… A slider activates the HiDock H1’s two-way noise canceling algorithm for crystal-clear audio and video calls on both sides, and if all that wasn’t enough, the HiDock H1 even lets you fast-charge your laptop and phone at 100W and 18W respectively.

While most people fear the prospect of AI taking our jobs, the actual reality is that AI is capable of making us better at our jobs. By handling mundane tasks, AI can free us up to actually do what we’re good at. AI isn’t replacing us soon… it’s empowering us, and the HiDock H1 is proof of that fact. While outwardly the HiDock H1 appears to be a multiport dock for your PC, it packs a few extra features that take the elbow grease out of your meetings and group calls. A control panel on the front of the HiDock H1 allows you to answer/end calls, mute or unmute yourself, or record your call directly with just one press of a button. A volume knob lets you control the HiDock H1’s output level (it has its own speaker unit), and a slider button activates the dock’s Bidirectional Noise Canceling feature, allowing you to choose how powerful the BNC is… but HiNotes, HiDock H1’s app, is where its secret sauce lies.

Transcribe with State-of-the-art AI Engine – Unlock lightning-fast and precise transcription with HiNotes, supporting 57 languages and long recordings.

Real-time VoiceMark with One Press – Make a VoiceMark to highlight anything that matters to you during recordings and HiNotes will intelligently analyze the content before and after the marker during the transcription.

Organized Summary by ChatGPT – Whether it’s a Zoom or Teams meeting or a casual call via Facetime or WhatsApp, HiNotes intelligently summarizes them into well-structured notes.

The app lets you record conversations not just on your laptop, but even the ones on your phone. Bluetooth 5.2 allows the HiDock H1’s control panel to work with both your laptop as well as your phone, letting you record calls directly to the app. The HiNotes web app runs ChatGPT’s API to supercharge these recordings, letting you transcribe them in as many as 57 languages; and then perform additional actions like summarizing them, turning them into memos, or letting choose from a variety of preset templates for phone calls, online lectures, and meetings. Additionally, you can even add ‘voice marks’ during recordings that get highlighted within the HiNotes app, enhancing your ability to locate key information in lengthy recordings, sort of like bookmarks in a book.

While the app may be HiDock H1’s most impressive (and attractive) feature, it doesn’t take away from how darned impressive the dock’s hardware actually is. On the front of the dock is a high-fidelity speaker unit with a 5W tweeter, 7W full-band driver, and a passive radiator delivering crisp, balanced audio that’s as good for calls as it is for music and movies. The control panel right beside it is purely physical (no touchscreen elements) and has a tactile knob for volume control. On the side is a contact-point system for a snap-on wireless headset module that lets you switch to headset-mode for private calls or while on the move. The module contains its own single earpiece that pairs with the HiDock H1, reminiscent of the early 2000s with every businessperson wearing a Jabra Bluetooth earpiece!

Flip the HiDock H1 over and you’ve got as many as 11 different ports that help supercharge your laptop. Two 4K@60Hz HDMI ports let you hook dual external displays to your laptop, while an ethernet port gives you a 2.5Gbps wired connection. An SD and a MicroSD card slot lets you, well, connect memory cards, making it perfect for photographers. Finally, two USB-A ports help hook thumb drives, while three USB-C ports enable both power and data delivery. The HiDock H1 can output up to 118W of power, making it a perfect pass-through charging solution for your laptop and a fast-charger for your smartphone.

The hardware works right out of the box, in tandem with all popular meeting software and services (a pretty impressive feat for its introductory $149 price tag on launch), while the app runs on ChatGPT’s API to provide its AI features. Given that circumstance, the app runs on a subscription model, with 1,000 minutes of recording/transcription for $9.9 a month, or 12,000 minutes for $49 yearly. Your calls get recorded only when you press the HiDock H1 button on the device, and recordings are stored locally, protected by end-to-end 256-bit encryption. Since HiDock H1 uses OpenAI’s APIs, it’s kept private and isn’t used to train any AI model, ensuring your conversations don’t ever make it to the cloud or to ChatGPT’s database servers (in line with OpenAI’s privacy statement).

Given its capabilities, there’s quite literally nothing the HiDock H1 can’t do. It works as a multiport dock, a hi-fi speaker, a control panel for video calls/meetings, and an AI-powered assistant that helps extract every bit of noteworthy information from your online interactions. Ultimately, it frees up clutter on your desk by being a powerful, compact multiport solution, ensures high-quality calls with its Bidirectional Noise Cancelation, and frees up hours of work each day by recording, transcribing, and formatting information from your day-to-day meetings for you. Now that’s an AI-enabled future I don’t mind settling for!

PlayStation 6 concept with industrial looks and a retro-modern controller could actually work in 2027

Sony’s next big gaming console is in works under the wraps and will not be revealed any time soon. This development came to light when two job listings from Sony (now removed from the job board) hinted about their future intent. They were looking for someone who could help the company in “contributing to identifying and developing the technology portfolio of future PlayStation platforms.”

Backed by the fact that PlayStation 6 is going to be a living reality in the coming years, the concept design world couldn’t help but reignite their imagination. The PS6 concept with a streamlined design and the minimalistic one are the prime examples. Pretty futile exercise if you look from a neutral perspective but ask any gamer out there, and it is in fact not!

Designer: Darko DARMAR Markovic

Slated for 2027 release, the next-gen Sony gaming console will give the PS5 a solid stint of seven years before presenting gamers with the next big graduation of the world’s most famous gaming console. When the PS5 was released back in 2020 it was already a very futuristic design compared to the likes of Xbox. That trait will most definitely carry onto the PS6, and this concept design with a very industrial look could be a very good starting point for the in-house Sony designers.

Taking a leap to a very Cyberpunk aesthetic with the wireless controller slot on the sides makes more sense than ever. It looks like an introverted Cyborg Mecha, ready to reveal its furious side. While the console unit has a futuristic DNA to it, the controller seems like a nostalgic mix of classic controllers graduated into the next-gen Metaverse world. That said, it is very sleek and the buttons are ergonomically positioned for tactical in-game advantage.

The vertical design approach gives this PlayStation 6 a staunch character much like the current generation console. Combined with the cool color options (Pristine White, Cool Blue and Military Green) that Darko has proposed, the PS6 could continue its dominance in this form.

This multipurpose tablet orients in any direction for work and play on the go

Having a single gadget that takes care of your professional work, entertainment and gaming needs is in trend. More so when you can’t carry around multiple gadgets all the time. A tablet solves most of the purposes but then you must buy additional accessories too, thereby adding to the overall cost.

iScream Homelearn Book gets over this catch-22 situation with a mindfully designed gadget that’s well-tailored for any member of your family. Whether you love to binge-watch, do long gaming sessions, or get down to prepping your next big presentation; this versatile next-gen tablet is for you.

Designer: Found Founded

The mobile device is a combination of a large screen, tablet stand and a keyboard for setting up in any orientation. With the pedestals, detachable magnets and the robust build this gadget can be maneuvered in any direction without the fear of toppling over. In that sense, it’s your mini PC on the go.

The makers have kept the design and the color schema to be ultra-simple to avoid any visual distractions while working. It comes with a stylus pen to scribe down text, make digital art, or jot down any other details, much like the Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone. Of course, other options on the market from players like Apple, Samsung, Amazon and Microsoft are there, but having the ecosystem of all accessories finely tuned with the main gadget is an advantage.

There is no word if the iScream is going to get past the concept and prototype stage or is it going to be released someday as a buyable option. If it does, the software-hardware integration has to be spot-on if the makers want to enter the closely contested market space!
